Construction
Traditional Heritage
Produced by family-run workshops in the German Alps, with over 30 years of experience dedicated to glue-free wood construction. This rare & privilege expertise is practiced by only a few craftsmen in Germany, with comparable traditions preserved mainly in Switzerland, Austria, and Japan.
Sap Levels
According to the "moon wood" theory (which aligns with historical records from figures like Julius Caesar and Pliny the Elder), the moon's gravitational pull influences sap levels in trees much like it does ocean tides. Felling during the waning moon ensures the sap content in the tree is at its absolute lowest point.
Produced by family-run workshops in the German Alps, Since 1991 with experience dedicated to glue-free moon wood furniture and since 2018 construction of Thoma.at wood houses. This rare & privilege expertise is practiced by only a few craftsmen in Germany, with comparable traditions preserved mainly in Switzerland, Austria, and Japan.
Ancient Inspiration
by Japanese temples and alpine wooden houses that have stood for centuries, a traditional wisdom preserving techniques proven through time.
Free of Glue
Allows the wood to breathe, dry, and move naturally, avoiding internal stress, cracks, contamination, and deterioration.
Master Craftsmanship
The craft demands decades of deep knowledge and hands-on training, making these skills rare and increasingly exclusive in today’s accelerated industry.
Specialized Skills
Every piece of wood is hand-selected and consciously oriented to maximize structural stability, durability, and aesthetic consistency.
Expansion joints
Engineered with adaptable tolerances and mechanical connections, free from adhesives and surface coatings, allowing the wood to adapt, breathe, expand, and dry naturally, preventing cracks and ensuring long-term stability.
Flexible structure
Solid-wood walls and floors form a glue-free, resilient core that absorbs physical torsion and climatic stress.
40+40 mm walls
The solid core of the COCOON Freelancer uses an amount of 100% solid wood equivalent to roughly 18 tables measuring about 200 × 100 × 4 cm. A similar volume of wood is also required for the exterior structure.
20 mm furniture
The interior is crafted from light and stable glue-free panels, designed to maintain consistent purity, breathability, and material integrity.
Weather resistance
The untreated exterior forms a protective gray patina over time and can be replaced if it deteriorates.
Water repellent
It is carefully detailed without screw intrusion, or end-grain exposure to prevent water absorption, accumulation, remain ventilated and dry completely.
Natural protection
The wood develops a gray patina through aging, making it weather-resistant and protecting the core from water and sun rays.
Dried calmly
The wood is dried for years and naturally until it reaches the optimal stability for long-lasting properties.
Winter harvested
Each tree is harvested only during the winter sap-rest period from the waning to new moon phase, reducing insect presence, avoiding chemical treatments, and minimizing deformation naturally.
Local source
Spruce and larch or exclusive alpine spruce are sourced from local forests cared for by the same families for generations, ensuring sustainable stewardship, exceptional wood quality, full traceability, and minimal transport impact.
Moon Wood
Moon Wood is a special type of harvesting timber during the cold winter months, specifically from the waning moon phase up to the new moon. During this period, trees are in sap rest, with water tightly bound within their cells rather than freely available in pores and cavities. This results in wood that dries with minimal shrinkage and swelling, reducing cracks and warping.
Additionally, moon wood contains less sugar during the waning moon phase, making it naturally more resistant to fungi, worms, and insects. This inherent protection eliminates the need for conventional, toxic wood preservatives, benefiting both the environment and human health.
This traditional harvesting method was used in building ancient temples and mountain huts, whose durability and resilience are still evident today.
